This blog is intended to serve as an outline and preview for a book I am in the process of writing: Hard Cases: A Critique of Pure Libertarianism. Notice I use the word “critique,” not criticism. I am a libertarian and have been my entire adult life (I’m pushing 44) and what I hope to achieve in writing this book is to take seriously some of the “hard cases” in the world of libertarian philosophy. In broad terms, the book will attempt to tackle the issue of “the other” which I think is at the heart of most libertarian controversy. While many people would concede many of the main points of libertarianism, it most often seems to apply best to competent adult humans sharing a common civil society. How does libertarianism deal with the issues of property, foreign relations and immigration, children and other less-competent humans, animal rights, etc.? To me, it is in these areas where libertarian philosophy needs to advance and, while I will not suggest that my book will answer these questions, I hope that it will raise the level of discussion and suggest possible solutions to these problems. I cannot promise that these posts will occur on any sort of daily basis but I hope that, when they do, they will raise important questions. Your feedback is encouraged.
